She started a company when previous employer wouldn't hire vets

Elizabeth Perez / Special to NBC Latino

    By NBC Latino

Elizabeth Perez has trained more than 900 contractors in the clean energy industry in California, nearly 100 of which are veterans.

"In 2009, I approached the company I was with about training veterans, and they didn't see it," says Perez. "They weren’t really going to hire veterans, so I started on my own company."

She says there is a desperate need for companies to reach out to Veterans with opportunities.

Vet served for tuition benefits -- but now can't find work

NBC Latino / Spc. Joshua Ramey

Sgt. Raul Montano examines a photo he captured in Baghdad, Iraq, in the summer of 2006.

    By NBC Latino

Raul Montano always wanted to go to college and be a teacher. Ten years ago, Montano joined the Army, because after two years of community college, he wanted to go to school tuition-free.

But Montano says that promise is "impossible" to take advantage of and he’s now jobless and living off of his savings. He'll join thousands of veterans next week at NBC News' Hiring our Heroes job fairs in his bid to find work.
